Detective Howard Stegner is less than six months from retirement when he receives a package that will change his plans. In this package is a diorama containing four small hand-crafted ballerina puppets, captured mid-dance on a small stage. Stegner is then called to a crime scene at a local theater, where they discover four young women who have been murdered, drained of their blood, and dressed and posed - in the exact same positions as the puppets in the box.

 

Together with his long time partner, he must face off against a psychotic sociopath, intent on using his "masterpieces" to locate the only other human he considers a "real person." The puppet boxes, and the victims, keep appearing, and not even the FBI will be able to stop the inevitable showdown, between Detective Stegner and his deadly opponent.
